Terms of Use
These terms cover your use of the koven.chat reference instance. Other Koven servers operate under their own terms.
What you agree to
By using koven.chat you agree to participate in the public-square model: anything you post in a public room is visible to other users of that room, including users on other federated Koven servers. Governance events you sign (flags, votes) are visible to everyone, forever, by design.
Acceptable use
You may use Koven for any speech that is lawful in your jurisdiction and ours. The community decides what stays visible through the consensus process. The platform itself does not moderate.
One narrow exception: content that meets the floor_violation bar (CSAM, credible threats, doxxing) is collapsed without a vote. This is non-negotiable. Repeated floor violations may result in the operator of this instance suspending the offending account and reporting to law enforcement where required.
What you keep, what we keep
- You own everything you write. By posting it on a federated server you grant Koven a non-exclusive license to display, transmit, and federate that content for the purpose of running the chat product.
- The platform's source is MIT. Anything we add to the engine, gate, or client is open source under the same license.
- Governance events you sign are part of the public audit log. They cannot be unsigned. This is the price of an honest record.
Account suspension
The koven.chat operator may suspend an account only for the categories enumerated in the protocol: confirmed floor-violation activity, automation that overwhelms the homeserver, or compromise. Disagreement with what you say is not on that list and never will be.
Self-hosting
If you run your own Koven server, you accept responsibility for what is hosted on your hardware. You may set your own server-level rules within the documented protocol floors. You may not gate your server out of the federation while pretending to participate.
Disclaimers
Koven is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind. We are a small open-source project. We will do our best to keep things running and to fix bugs honestly, but we make no uptime promises.
Changes
If these terms change in a substantive way, we will post a notice on the home page and link the diff. The previous version stays in git forever.
